Suicidal Ideation Treatment

Learn more about suicidal ideation treatment at Riverview Behavioral Health Hospital in Texarkana, AR

Suicidal ideation is the clinical term for having thoughts about ending one’s own life. In many but not all cases, suicidal ideation is a symptom of a mental health disorder. Depressive disorders, bipolar disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are among the various forms of mental illness that can increase a person’s risk for having thoughts about ending his or her life.

Regardless of what has prompted an individual to develop thoughts of suicide, it is imperative that he or she receive effective, professional care that identifies and addresses the cause of these troubling thoughts. In addition to putting an individual in danger of actually attempting to end his or her life, suicidal ideation can have a detrimental impact on a person’s mental health and can lead him or her into other self-defeating thought patterns and maladaptive behaviors.

At Riverview Behavioral Health, we have significant experience working with men and women who have been struggling with suicidal ideation, and we have developed specialized programming that has helped these individuals to end these destructive thoughts. At Riverview, men and women can get the help they need to identify and address the underlying causes of their suicidal ideation, manage other symptoms that they may have been experiencing, and pursue healthier and more satisfying lives.

Helping a Loved One

Helping a loved one or family member get treatment for suicidal ideation

Discovering that someone in your life has been thinking about suicide can be a profoundly distressing experience. If a friend or family member has been struggling with suicidal ideation, please know that this individual needs professional help, and you can play an essential role in getting him or her that help.

Your first priority will be to ensure that your loved one is not in imminent danger. Talk to your loved one. Discuss what has prompted you to worry about his or her safety, and express your concern. Most importantly, listen. Your loved one’s willingness or hesitance to speak about this matter can provide you with essential information about what he or she has been experiencing and can provide you with insights into his or her current risk for suicide.

Contrary to an unfortunately persistent myth, broaching this topic with your loved one will not increase the likelihood that he or she will attempt to end his or her own life. Actually, your demonstration of active compassion and support can be a crucial experience that prompts your loved one to get help.

If you believe that your loved one may be at risk for a suicide attempt, get help immediately. Call 911, contact your community’s emergency response personnel, or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

Once you are sure that your loved one is safe, you can begin your efforts to get him or her into a treatment program. Research the types of treatment that have helped others who had been struggling with symptoms similar to what your loved one has been experiencing, and identify programs that appear to offer what your loved one needs.

This is where your familiarity with your loved one, your observations, and the information you get from discussions with him or her can be most valuable in finding the program that best matches your loved one’s personality, strengths, needs, and goals.

If at all possible, avoid trying to accomplish any of this on your own. Enlist a few close friends or trusted family members. Together, you can support each other, share information, and monitor your loved one to ensure that he or she remains safe until he or she enters treatment. If your loved one is hesitant to enter treatment, this small group can help to convince him or her of the necessity of doing so.

Once your loved one agrees to get help, the members of this support group can accompany him or her to appointments, provide transportation, arrange for childcare, and otherwise remove obstacles that may prevent your loved one from focusing on his or her health.

If you think that you may need professional help to deal with the impact of your loved one’s struggles, get that help. You cannot provide optimal support for your loved one if you are neglecting your own physical and/or psychological needs.

Finally, remember that suicidal ideation may be symptomatic of a complex mental health challenge, and that your loved one’s time in treatment may just be one step in a long recovery process. Plan to be a source of active support for your loved one every step of the way.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for suicidal ideation at Riverview Behavioral Health Hospital in Texarkana, AR

Ongoing untreated suicidal ideation can have a profoundly negative impact on virtually all aspects of a person’s life. Compulsive thoughts about ending one’s life can undermine a person’s ability to function within healthy interpersonal relationships, which can deprive the individual of vital sources of support and promote an unhealthy sense of isolation. People who struggle with suicidal ideation may also have difficulties performing to expectation in school or at work, which can diminish their ability to achieve and maintain a healthy independent lifestyle. The cumulative impact of inner torment and resultant failures or setbacks can diminish the individual’s self-esteem, exacerbate his or her symptoms, and push him or her into other self-defeating behaviors, such as substance abuse.

Getting treatment to overcome suicidal ideation can provide the individual with a myriad of benefits, including protection from future harm, the help to heal from past physical and/or psychological damage, and the guidance and support to pursue a healthier future.

To partake in the acute inpatient services that our behavioral health treatment center has to offer, we invite you to complete our admissions assessment so that our staff can determine if our treatment is right for you. Once done, and if the care we supply is appropriate, you will be able to engage in a blend of the following therapeutic supports while at our center:

Medication management services: When men and women come to our mental health treatment center, they are often grappling with symptoms of mental disorders that can be quite difficult to manage with just coping skills alone. For those who are struggling with some of the mental health disorders that can prompt a person to engage in thoughts of suicide, certain medications may be beneficial. For this reason, we are pleased to offer medication management services that are facilitated by our onsite psychiatrist. The need for medication will be thoroughly assessed, and any medications prescribed will be closely monitored to ensure their safety and effectiveness while an individual is in our care.

Medical care: While our psychiatric treatment center is not a medical hospital, men and women will receive basic medical care and attention from our medical doctor, nurse practitioner, and experienced team of nurses who are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We offer this form of care so that those who are seeking to overcome suicidal ideation are able to achieve and/or maintain good health for the duration of their stay with us.

Individual therapy: To afford the men and women we treat with the individualized attention they need to overcome suicidal ideation, individual therapy is offered one time each week while they are at our center. Licensed mental health professionals conduct these sessions, which can serve as a time to talk about experiences from the past, process current feelings and emotions, and develop goals for the future.

Group therapy: At our behavioral health treatment center, we include group therapy in the personalized treatment plans for each individual who has been struggling with thoughts of suicide. Held every day and led by both licensed mental health professionals and recreational therapists, group therapy is an integral part of the care we offer. Designed to foster camaraderie among patients, provide support in a communal setting, and allow men and women to encourage one another and practice skills, we supply process groups and a number of other groups that can cover the following topics:

  • Anger management
  • Anxiety management
  • Co-occurring disorders
  • Coping skills
  • Crisis intervention
  • Medication education
  • Psychoeducation on mental health disorders
  • Stress management

Family therapy: At least one time per week, patients at our behavioral health treatment center can participate in family therapy sessions with their loved ones. These sessions can mend damaged familial relationships, help family members begin to understand one another better, and assist all who attend in understanding the process of healing from the strife that may have been caused by suicidal ideation.

Family program: Our psychiatric treatment center offers a family program every other Friday. This program includes psychoeducational opportunities, process groups, and a chance to give and receive support to and from other family members and close friends who also care about someone who has been engaging in suicidal ideation. By making this sort of program available, we have found that the men and women who complete treatment at our center return to their respective homes with a stronger foundation of support.

The aforementioned interventions can help patients at Riverview Behavioral Health free themselves from suicidal ideation. Depending on the needs of the individual, certain methods of care may be added or removed from his or her treatment plan so that only the most favorable treatment outcomes result.
