Helping a Loved One

Helping a loved one or family member get treatment for bipolar disorder

If an important person in your life presents with symptoms synonymous with bipolar disorder, but is not currently receiving treatment for this illness, you can play an important role in helping this individual get the care he or she needs to live a healthy life. By adhering to the following suggestions, you can influence your friend or family member’s life in a positive way:

  • Talk to your loved one about how he or she is feeling. Be open to hearing what he or she has to say, and make sure to be empathic regarding the struggles that he or she may be dealing with as a result of suffering from untreated bipolar disorder
  • Research the signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder and treatment options near your loved one’s home that are equipped to treat your loved one’s most pressing needs.
  • Speak with your friend or family member about seeking treatment and encourage him or her to seek an assessment for services.
  • Ask your loved one if he or she would like you to be part of his or her healing process. If he or she does want your support, it is a good idea to make every effort to be there for him or her during this time in his or her life.

Finally, as someone who is helping a person heal from bipolar disorder, it is wise to engage in activities and hobbies that rejuvenate you and alleviate your own stress. Furthermore, if you feel you could benefit from partaking in your own treatment, it is beneficial to begin individual therapy or participate in some sort of group therapy.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for bipolar disorder at Riverview Behavioral Health Hospital in Texarkana, AR

Allowing the symptoms of bipolar disorder to remain unabated can trigger several adverse effects that can be life-altering. During manic episodes, an individual is at risk for being injured if he or she partakes in reckless behaviors. During depressive episodes, a person may resort to self-harm or even self-medicating with drugs and/or alcohol as a means of coping with emotional pain. As time presses on, symptoms experienced during these episodes can become worse and cause other mental health disorders to manifest at the same time. Employment and earning potential can decline, relationships with loved ones may suffer, and the ability to live a healthy life can be compromised if care is delayed for bipolar disorder symptoms. Luckily, there are many options for care that exist that have helped countless men and women reclaim their lives and manage this disorder more effectively.

Once done, and if the care we supply is appropriate, you will be able to engage in a blend of the following therapeutic supports while at our center:

Medication management services: When men and women come to Riverview Behavioral Health for treatment, they are often grappling with symptoms of mental disorders that can be quite difficult to manage with just coping skills alone. Especially if a person is suffering from severe symptoms of bipolar disorder, certain medications may be needed in order for the individual to focus on other aspects of his or her treatment. For this reason, we are pleased to offer medication management services that are facilitated by our onsite psychiatrist. The need for medication will be thoroughly assessed, and any medications prescribed will be closely monitored to ensure their safety and effectiveness while an individual is in our care.

Medical care: While Riverview Behavioral Health is not a medical hospital, men and women will receive basic medical care and attention from our medical doctor, nurse practitioner, and experienced team of nurses who are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We offer this form of care so that those seeking to heal from bipolar disorder are able to achieve and/or maintain good health for the duration of their stay with us.

Individual therapy: So as to afford the men and women we treat with the individualized attention they need to heal from bipolar disorder, individual therapy is offered one time each week while they are at our center. Licensed mental health professionals conduct these sessions, which can serve as a time to talk about experiences from the past, process current feelings and emotions, and develop goals for the future.

Group therapy: At Riverview Behavioral Health, we include group therapy in each person’s treatment for bipolar disorder. Held every day and led by both licensed mental health professionals and recreational therapists, group therapy is an integral part of the care we offer. Designed to foster camaraderie among patients, provide support in a communal setting, and allow men and women to encourage one another and practice skills, we supply process groups and a number of other groups that can cover the following topics:

  • Anger management
  • Anxiety management
  • Co-occurring disorders
  • Coping skills
  • Crisis intervention
  • Medication education
  • Psychoeducation on mental health disorders
  • Stress management

Family therapy: At least one time per week, patients at Riverview Behavioral Health can participate in family therapy sessions with their loved ones. These sessions can mend damaged familial relationships, help family members begin to understand one another better, and assist all who attend in understanding the process of healing from the strife that may have been caused by bipolar disorder.

Family program: As a means of providing those closest to the individuals we treat with education on bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses and so that they can receive their own support during this time, Riverview Behavioral Health offers a family program every other Friday. This program includes psychoeducational opportunities, process groups, and a chance to give and receive support to and from other family members and close friends who also care about someone battling bipolar disorder. By making this sort of program available, we have found that the men and women who complete treatment at our center return to their respective homes with a stronger foundation of support.

The aforementioned interventions are those that help patients at Riverview Behavioral Health develop the skills and confidence needed to effectively cope with and manage bipolar disorder symptoms in a healthy and productive manner. Depending on the needs of the individual, certain methods of care may be added or removed from his or her treatment plan so that only the most favorable treatment outcomes result.
