Helping a Loved One

Helping a loved one or family member get help for anxiety

If someone in your life has been struggling with an anxiety disorder, you have likely experienced a range of difficult emotions such as confusion, fear, and frustration. These types of reaction are both normal and understandable. The difficulty of watching a loved one suffer can be magnified when the cause of that suffering appears to be beyond your control to help.

In the case of anxiety disorders, it is true that your loved one needs more help than you alone can provide. However, this does not mean that you have no role to play in the effort to protect your loved one’s health and improve his or her life. Your efforts can have a tremendous positive effect. Please consider the following:

Start by educating yourself. Research anxiety disorders, identify the signs and symptoms that your loved one has been exhibiting, and look into effective anxiety disorder treatment options. The more you understand what your loved one is experiencing, the better prepared you will be to provide valuable support and meaningful guidance.

Talk to your loved one. Reputable websites and mental health experts can help you to understand the nature and scope of anxiety disorders, but only your loved one can provide you with insights into what he or she is actually experiencing. Depending upon his or her symptoms, this conversation may not be easy, but it can be essential, both to gain information and to express your unshakeable love and support.

Identify treatment providers that appear to be a good match according to what your loved one has been experiencing. As noted earlier on this page, a thorough professional assessment will be necessary to determine an accurate diagnosis and to develop an effective treatment plan, but you can help to find sources of treatment that are well suited to your loved one.

If at all possible, get help in this effort. Enlist a small group of trusted friends or family members to help you with your research and to offer their support to your loved one. The impact of a mental health disorder is rarely limited to the individual who actually has the disorder. Your life and the lives of others who are close to your loved one will be affected as well. Do not neglect your own needs. Getting support from others will allow you to provide the greatest support to your loved one.

When your loved one begins the process of selecting a program and entering treatment, do whatever you can to remove obstacles. Volunteer to drive him or her to appointments. Arrange for childcare. Cook meals. Anything you can do that will allow your loved one to focus on his or her health will be beneficial in both the short and long term.

Finally, remember that recovery from an anxiety disorder can be a lifelong process, and the definition of success can vary from person to person. Your loved one will experience both progress and setbacks during and after his or her time in treatment. Plan to continue to play an active positive role in his or her life before, during, and after he or she is receiving care.

Why Consider Treatment

Why get treatment for anxiety at Rivervew Behavioral Health Hospital

Failing to receive proper professional care to treat an anxiety disorder can have a detrimental impact on virtually all aspects of a person’s existence.

Depending upon the nature and severity of an individual’s symptoms, he or she may struggle to establish and maintain healthy interpersonal relationships, may have difficulties making appropriate academic progress, and may experience a wealth of challenges in his or her efforts to find and retain gainful employment. The cumulative impact of such struggles can significantly undermine the individual’s ability to live an independent life. These continued setbacks may also serve to exacerbate the symptoms that the individual has been experiencing, which can lead to an ever-increasing sense of withdrawal and isolation.

People who experience life-limiting symptoms of anxiety disorders may also be at increased risk for physical health problems, as well as the development of problems with substance abuse, self-harm, suicidal ideation, and additional concerns.

When a person who has been struggling with an anxiety disorder enters treatment at a center where he or she can receive focused comprehensive care, he or she can begin to heal from past damage, avoid future harm, and begin to develop the skills and strategies that will support improved quality of life.

Our staff of expertly trained professionals has extensive experience in treating those who are grappling with such concerns, and the interventions we include in our programming are proven effective in helping men and women become healthy in mind and body once more.

To partake in the acute inpatient services that Riverview Behavioral Health has to offer, we invite you to complete our admissions assessment so that our staff can determine if our treatment is right for you. Once done, and if the care we supply is appropriate, you will be able to engage in a blend of the following therapeutic supports while at our center:

Medication management services: When men and women come to Riverview Behavioral Health for treatment, they are often grappling with symptoms of mental health disorders that can be quite difficult to manage with just coping skills alone. Especially if a person is suffering from severe symptoms of anxiety disorders, certain medications may be needed in order for the individual to focus on other aspects of his or her treatment. For this reason, we are pleased to offer medication management services that are facilitated by our onsite psychiatrist. The need for medication will be thoroughly assessed, and any medications prescribed will be closely monitored to ensure their safety and effectiveness while an individual is in our care.

Medical care: While Riverview Behavioral Health is not a medical hospital, men and women will receive basic medical care and attention from our medical doctor, nurse practitioner, and experienced team of nurses who are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We offer this form of care so that those seeking to heal from anxiety disorders are able to achieve and/or maintain good health for the duration of their stay with us.

Individual therapy: So as to afford the men and women we treat with the individualized attention they need to heal from anxiety disorders, individual therapy is offered one time each week while they are at our center. Licensed mental health professionals conduct these sessions, which can serve as a time to talk about experiences from the past, process current feelings and emotions, and develop goals for the future.

Group therapy: At Riverview Behavioral Health, we include group therapy in each person’s treatment for an anxiety disorder. Held every day and led by both licensed mental health professionals and recreational therapists, group therapy is an integral part of the care we offer. Designed to foster camaraderie among patients, provide support in a communal setting, and allow men and women to encourage one another and practice skills, we supply process groups and a number of other groups that can cover the following topics:

  • Anger management
  • Anxiety management
  • Co-occurring disorders
  • Coping skills
  • Crisis intervention
  • Medication education
  • Psychoeducation on mental health disorders
  • Stress management

Family therapy: At least one time per week, patients at Riverview Behavioral Health can participate in family therapy sessions with their loved ones. These sessions can mend damaged familial relationships, help family members begin to understand one another better, and assist all who attend in understanding the process of healing from the strife that may have been caused by anxiety disorders.

Family program: As a means of providing those closest to the individuals we treat with education on anxiety disorders and other mental illnesses and so that they can receive their own support during this time, Riverview Behavioral Health offers a family program every other Friday. This program includes psychoeducational opportunities, process groups, and a chance to give and receive support to and from other family members and close friends who also care about someone battling an anxiety disorder. By making this sort of program available, we have found that the men and women who complete treatment at our center return to their respective homes with a stronger foundation of support.

The aforementioned interventions are those that help patients at Riverview Behavioral Health develop the skills and confidence needed to effectively cope with and manage symptoms of an anxiety disorder in a healthy and productive manner. Depending on the needs of the individual, certain methods of care may be added or removed from his or her treatment plan so that only the most favorable treatment outcomes result.
